The Dynamic Duo

The Dynamic Duo Dines in Style

We’re buddies. She likes how I make her laugh, and I like how she just hangs with me. We both like to travel and we enjoy sophomoric humor. Oh, and we both appreciate the finer things in life. My daughter is a clever companion and a trying child. Someday, I hope she does things in a certain way because of my influence. I know I will look at the world forever through a different lens because of her.

Travel Buddy

Making a bouquet

We haven’t taken a trip together for awhile — just Jordan and I. This weekend would remedy that. We flew to San Francisco for a long weekend of sight seeing, shopping and fine dining. Jordan had a great time, and so did I. We posted some cool photos from our trip on Flickr.

Among the cool parts:
  • Jordan telling me she wants to help me write Juliette (this should be fun)
  • Numerous self-disclosures to innocent strangers — “I have cancer”
  • Fish feast all around — we ate so much seafood I think we’ve sprouted gills
  • She’s become a shutter bug

And I just realized that she wore the same darn hoodie to San Diego. She really does have more than one set of clothes.

Confidants

The Girls Confide @ the W San Diego

I suspect they have a bond that will affect them both for the rest of their lives — a bond beyond the normal mother/daughter ties. They’ve been through so much together, and while each knows how to push the other’s buttons, they ebb and flow together like kindred souls. As Jordan grows ever more mature, transforming into a graceful young woman, I enjoy watching her take quiet comfort in the company of her mother.

Breakfast with Jordan

Jordan recounts a story over eggs and fruit.

She’s wired just like me. It’s wonderful! This weekend we bunked in the same room. Jeanette and Jordan slept in one bed, I slept in the other…with the dog. I would wake up first, just as the sun was rising. I’d smack my lips a bit, roll over and rub my eyes. As they came into focus, I’d look over at the other bed. Jeanette would be crashed out, unwakeable. But no sooner than I looked over would I see my daughter rubbing her eyes and stirring in the bed. A few minutes later, the two of us would head out to breakfast. We’re the early risers in the family. We take a kind of pride in it. And it makes for great breakfast conversations — just the two of us, feeding our faces and sharing our dreams.
